FIRST AIDERS AT THE READY TO SUPPORT CARNIVAL
Hundreds of St John Ambulance volunteers will be on duty to provide first aid care at the Notting Hill Carnival this weekend (Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August).
St John Ambulance will deploy 400 volunteers each day to ensure the wellbeing of the one million visitors expected to attend the event, which is Europe’s biggest street carnival.
The nation’s leading first aid charity will work alongside the London Ambulance Service throughout the weekend.
Last year, St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales’s) District treated more than 700 people over the two day carnival. The majority of people were treated for minor injuries and ailments, such as headaches and blisters, but St John Ambulance volunteers were also on hand to treat anyone suffering from something more serious.
This year, St John Ambulance will be deploying doctors, nurses and medical professionals along with motorbike and cycle responders. There will also be 11 treatment centres strategically positioned along the Carnival route and 30 ambulances will be provided across the two-day event.
Ann Cable, Commissioner of St John Ambulance in London, said: ‘We have been involved with the Notting Hill Carnival since it began in 1966 and we are proud to be working with the organisers again this year.
‘We believe that first aid can be the difference between lives lost and lives saved, so we work closely with London Ambulance Service to make sure that everyone can enjoy this spectacular event in safety. ‘St John Ambulance will have 11 treatment centres within the carnival area, so if you need first aid and are able to get to a treatment centre, please do so rather than dialling 999. The area is likely to be congested, so getting to one of our treatment centres on foot may reduce the time you have to wait for treatment.’
In preparation for the occasion, the charity has issued the following advice:
- Prepare for high temperatures by using plenty of sun cream and wearing a hat.
- Take advantage of the drinking water available.
- If we are not blessed with perfect summer weather do ensure that you have a couple of light layers of clothing to keep you reasonably dry and warm.
- Remember flip-flops are no protection against broken glass and the debris that will be on the streets.
