Notting Hill

George Orwell

George Orwell's House Portobello RoadGeorge Orwell (1903 - 1950)
There were a few literary giants that lived in Notting Hill and one no less is George Orwell who resided at 22 Portobello Road. His literary career was started at this Notting Hill, address after resigning from the Indian Imperial Police. A blue plaque commemorates his residence (see picture opposite).

George Orwell was a British journalist and author, who wrote perhaps the two of the most famous novels of the 20th century 'Animal Farm' (published in 1945) and 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' (published in 1949).

'Animal Farm' was a political fable which was set in a farmyard with typical farm animals and based on the now famous Stalin's betrayal of the Russian Revolution. The book was a resounding success and it making Orwell's name and it made him financially comfortable.

'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was a story set in an imaginary totalitarian future and was as great, if not a bigger success than Animal Farm. The book made a deep impression on english society then as it does today, with it's well known title and many modern phrases, such as 'Big Brother is watching you', 'doublethink' and 'newspeak'.

George Orwell's health was deteriorating over this, his crowning period of writing, and he sadly died of tuberculosis on 21 January 1950.
