All Saints

"All Saints" The Pop Singers
by Daniel D

"All Saints" is a group of four young pop singer girls whose debut album 'All Saints' was released in 1997. Two of the members Melanie Blatt and Shaznay Lewis founded the group and later they were joined by Nicole Appleton and Natalie Appleton who were sisters.

Their story begins when Melanie and Shaznay were sixteen year old and met each other in London. Their friendship took place in Metamorphisis, a recording studio on All Saints Road in Notting Hill, London.

Shaz was an avid singer since the age of thirteen. She performed in some singing contest at school as well. She says that she would always like to sing. Today if she had been a worker at a shop, then also she would still have been singing side by side. She used to sing songs by all popular singers like Madonna and Whitney Houston. Shaz was supported by her friends who referred her to Benend of Metamorphisis, a recording studio. She was invited by Ben for a test and the way she performed was appreciated by people over there and it was in this studio where she met Mel.

In 1993, another member Simone Rainford joined them and decided to work together. Initially, they thought of naming their group as 'Spice' but were not much satisfied with this name. They named themselves as All Saints 1.9.7.5 after the street where they first met and the year of their birth. They were signed to ZTT records.

In 1994, they performed for the first time at the 'Touch' magazine stage at the Notting Hill Carnival. The three songs which they recorded were not successful. Moreover Mel and Simone differed in their opinions and attitude which created a bit of tension in the group.

In mid-1995, Simone Rainford left the band and ZTT records dropped their band from their label. But she says that she has no regrets because she wanted to make a career in Solo and that All Saints as a great hit did not affect her anyway.

Mel and Shaz then started looking out for a substitute for Simone. Mel's father helped them find Nicole Appleton whom he knew from days she was at Sylvia Young Theatre School. They tried to convince Nicole to join the band. Nicole's sister Natalie also joined the band in spite of having a 2-yr old baby. Nicole and Natalie's parents took the responsibility of taking care of the baby. They were happy to see their daughters pursuing a career in music.

In May 1996, the four band members met Karl Gordon, who was a former band member of OutLaw Porse. He recorded a demo for "I know Where It's At".

They together hunted for new record deals. Finally they got a deal at London Records in November 1996.

Their debut single 'I Know Where It's At' went on number four in the UK Single Charts in the year 1997. The next outstanding single 'Never Ever' took them to the 'Star' success. About millions of copies were sold in the UK. They got the BRIT Awards in 1998 for this song as the Best Single and Best Video.

They were also awarded as the Breakthrough Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Their Top Chart "Pure Shores" was the best selling single of 2000. They won five No.1 singles in five years. In 2001, the band split up and later reunited in January, 2006 and signed a deal after which their third studio album titled Studio l was released on 13th November 2006. On November 6, 2006 the first single of the reunited team was released. Its name was Rock Steady. The song was played on The Chris Moyles show on BBC radio1 on Sept., 21 2006.
